The Western view in general terms is the stimulation of the skin or muscle with an acupuncture needle sends a message to the brain via the spinal cord. This then releases endorphins and enkephalins that will relieve the pain. It can stimulate the healing process in the body on a cellular level to assist in the treatment of such conditions as Achilles Tendinopathy and Tendinitis. Please note, during any treatment the therapist will always gain consent from the client before carrying out any acupuncture services to ensure you are happy and comfortable with the prospect of acupuncture.
The theory is that the body's own life energy known as its "chi" flows via 12 bilateral meridians that are all interconnected like an electrical circuit. Good health, is therefore an even flow of energy throughout this circuit, otherwise known as a meridian. Any blockages within this circuit will produce pain. More often than not, the site of pain is the site of the blockage. This site of pain will present as a musculoskeletal condition, such as sciatica. By applying acupuncture needles on specific points around the painful area and possibly on distal points (further along the meridian) we will release the blockage in the meridian and therefore eliminate pain. The oriental view of Acupuncture can also look at diseases and functions of the internal organs and their corresponding meridians. For example, skin conditions relate to the Lung and Large Intestine Meridians.
